The rise of Occupy Wall Street has given new life to questions of economic inequality in America. Economists across the political spectrum agree that the rich are getting richer, while the middle class is shrinking. But is this just a linger effect of the Great Recession, or part of a longer trend? Why does it matter that we’re becoming less equal economically? What can be done to fix the problems?
Dr. Jay Coggins is an Associate Professor in Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota, where he teaches courses in economic theory and environmental economics. He has published widely on topics including air and water quality, cap and trade, economic inequality, and the economics of politics. Professor Coggins is a past Associate Editor of the Journal of Environmental Economic and Management and a current Policy Fellow with Growth & Justice.
